Horizon Showroom

BACKGROUND

Established in Brooklyn in 1999, Horizon Window Treatments is a premier custom window treatment supplier for high-end projects in New York City.

CLIENT’S NEEDS

Originally operating from a small, second floor showroom on the Upper East Side, Horizon needed to expand and wanted to create the largest dedicated window shade showroom in New York City. They desired to redefine the experience of purchasing window treatments by presenting products within an open, contemporary environment exclusively for window shades. Horizon decided to rent a raw, former street-level storage facility in a historic loft building from 1910. They needed an architect to design and gut-renovate the space transforming it into their new showroom that would comprehensively display fabrics and window treatments in this new manner.

DESIGN INTENT

As one of our earliest projects, Horizon brought in Soluri Architecture to provide a full-service design package once the lease for the new showroom was signed. Our intent was to create a stunning, contemporary showroom that creates a luxurious experience for professional designers and retail customers seeking new window treatments.
We decided to break the showroom up into distinct areas to meet each of their requirements, but tied them together with a dropped ceiling surrounded by cove lighting flowing through the space. This ceiling also subtly hides the heating and cooling systems to minimize the visual distractions. On the sides, different display areas and vignettes help to break up the space, but  are visually weaved together with soffits.

FINAL PROJECT

The project has been hugely successful for Horizon, making them the largest dedicated window treatment showroom in New York City.
The final showroom is spacious and luxurious, allowing Horizon to simultaneously work with multiple clients at different stages of the process. The dropped ceiling element ties together the different sales and display areas as intended, while unifying the existing asymmetric columns that run through the space.
In addition to designing the showroom, creating construction documents, obtaining permits, and overseeing the construction, Soluri Architecture also picked the furnishings and other decorative elements. This included the interior design/decorating of several vignettes that highlight the quality and style of window treatments and upholstery that Horizon does for its high-end clientele.
