CCM – Willoughby Street Clinic

Community Counseling & Mediation’s (CCM) newly opened Willoughby Street Clinic in downtown Brooklyn re-imagines mental health care for at-risk children, youth, and families.

Set atop a historically landmarked building in downtown Brooklyn, the 6,000-square-foot clinic transformed a fluorescent-lit commercial office into a restorative environment that promotes healing, dignity, and inclusion. It is now CCM’s largest new facility, dramatically expanding their ability to serve at-risk children, youth, and families.

For over 40 years, CCM has worked with Brooklyn’s underserved communities, addressing the root causes of family instability, trauma, homelessness, and health disparities. Its network of NYS-licensed clinics, supportive housing facilities, prevention services, and youth programs reaches over 10,000 New Yorkers annually. The Willoughby Street Clinic delivers counseling, psychiatric services, psychosocial assessments, and workshops on domestic violence, anger management, and parenting skills.

The heart of the project lay in a seemingly contradictory goal: to create as many private, sound-proof interview rooms as possible while preserving the openness, daylight, and historic character of the soaring double-height galleries with stained-glass skylights. The design solution was a careful reconfiguration of circulation and program: The enclosed sound-proof interview rooms are strategically placed beneath the mezzanine, while circulation runs along the perimeter walls, ensuring that natural light penetrates deep into the interior. The first row of interview rooms acts as a transition to the mezzanine above. These design decisions allow the double-height spaces to remain – preserving the soaring galleries while highlighting the building’s unique stained-glass skylights. In addition, natural materials and abundant daylight create a welcoming environment that supports trauma-informed care principles.

The result is a facility where architecture actively contributes to recovery, where openness and privacy, history and modern healthcare coexist. By integrating the historic fabric with contemporary wellness design, the Willoughby Street Clinic not only elevates the quality of care but also affirms CCM’s commitment to providing accessible, competent mental health services to some of Brooklyn’s most vulnerable residents.
